From 26 June - 5 July 2010, the NUS University Lifeguard Corps (ULC) embarked on an exhilarating and memorable Lifesaving Exchange trip to Taiwan, where we experienced a whole new different dimension of what lifesaving is about.

Not only were we exposed to learning how to conduct rescues in the swift waters of Wulai, we were also given the opportunity to share and exchange experiences and knowledge with fellow lifesavers in Taiwan through the various university and local lifesaving event exchanges.

At a stop-over scenic spot along the Pacific Ocean while we were on our way from Hualien to Taipei. The views were mesmerizing.

At all smiles after a full day of whitewater rafting!

Very warm and genuine friends from Aletheia University after a friendly competition with them.

On April 1st, the NUS Office of Student Affairs (OSA) held the Student Life Evening event/dinner in NUS in appreciation of the contributions by all NUS students groups for bringing about vibrancy to the university as a whole.

We were entertained with song and dance performances by various students, cultural groups and even a performer from Cirque du Soleil! It was a truly enjoyable evening where NUS student leaders and OSA staff gathered for a night of interaction and good food.

Besides food and performances, the University Lifeguard Corps (ULC) also received a certificate of appreciation from OSA during this event.

We aim to continue fostering goodwill and friendship among undergraduates of different faculties through a common activity - Lifesaving - ‘Unity through Diversity’.

“Everyone knew it was an accident waiting to happen, why does it always take a tragedy for people to actually do something about it?”

Fellow lifesavers, safety is crucial at all times be it during trainings and/or during competitions. Please never be complacent about safety, and be more wary despite the need for speed in events.

In view of the increasing number of drowning cases in Singapore, a new water safety programme, SwimSafer, will be conducted in public swimming pools to teach water survival skills and drowning prevention techniques.

Teo Ho Pin, the chairman of the National Water Safety Council, said: “Every drowning case is one too many. So what we hope to do is that we hope to enhance the water safety knowledge among Singaporeans, and also to impart the necessary skills so that they can increase their chances of survival in different water situations.”

SwimSafer is the result of a review of existing programmes, combining the best of the Learn-To-Swim Programme and National Survival Swimming Award. Instructor to pupil ratio will be reduced from 1:20 to 1:10 so swimmers will be able to get more attention from their instructors, and at the same time, enhancing the safety of participants attending this water safety programme.

According to Channelnewsasia, the Singapore Sports Council (SSC) will “train all instructors at SSC’s 24 swimming complexes to get them certified in time for the programme in July.”

In short, it is not enough to know how to swim.

All swimmers need to know about water safety and what they should do when they run into difficulty in the water.

On January 29th, 10pm, NTU held its annual Sundown Swimathon as part of its Swim Fest 2010. The Sundown Swimathon is a one-of-a-kind segment of the Swim Fest where teams of 5 would sign up to swim from 10pm to 7am on the next day.

3 teams from NUS Lifesaving took part in the Sundown Swimathon where we all swam up to almost 2000 laps overnight. The Alumni team came in 3rd among 16 teams, swimming 712 laps during the 9 gruelling hours.

“When I go out and race, I’m not trying to beat opponents, I’m trying to beat what I have done … to beat myself, basically. People find that hard to believe because we’ve had such a bias to always strive to win things. If you win something and you haven’t put everything into it, you haven’t actually achieved anything at all. When you’ve had to work hard for something and you’ve got the best you can out of yourself on that given day, that’s where you get satisfaction from.”
