NORTHWEST SWIMSAFER CARNIVAL

October 31st 2011

in General Updates | 0 Comments

This year’s North West SwimSafer Carnival was truly an unforgettable experience. Held at Woodlands Swimming Complex, with about 250 participants, it is the first large-scale event for members of the North West SwimSafer Clubs who were equipped with swimming and survival skills through the National SwimSafer program. Competitions as well as a mass swim attracted participants including members of the public, who were inspired by the concept of active living.

Some certified lifeguards from the National University of Singapore Lifeguard Corps (ULC)
were invited to demonstrate a few basic lifesaving skills, including Talk, Reach, Throw, Swim and Tow. The lifesavers also introduced some useful techniques to assess dangerous situations in order to come up with a better rescue procedure.

The Guest-of-Honour was Mayor of North West District, Dr Teo Ho Pin. And the National SwimSafer programme was initiated by Dr Teo. In describing his vision for this program, Dr Teo said:” By demonstrating basic lifesaving steps at the North West SwimSafer Carnival 2011, we aim to equip members with additional knowledge that will enable them to react appropriately during difficult water conditions.”

Besides this, NUS ULC has devoted a lot more in the community. We are featured on CAN.

On 15 Oct, our annual event, the Beach Introduction, was successfully held at Sentosa.

This year, we had SIM Lifesaving team to join us. We introduced open water to our new batch of lifesavers. A wide range of open water lifesaving techniques were introduced, including beach sprint workouts, flags, rope throw, basic board paddling, skis, board rescue etc… It was truly a full day of joy and fun.

Many thanks to Mr Sim and previous batches of lifesavers who had made this event both successful and fulfilling.

Here’s a few pictures that captured those wonderful moments, enjoy!

SPLASHDOWN 2011

September 21st 2011

in General Updates | 0 Comments

10th September 2011 saw the conclusion of Splashdown 2011, organized by the NUS University Lifeguard Corps. The Swimathon was a frothing success as over 170 participants churned the waters for 3 hours at the Sports and Recreation Centre pool. Swimmers who complete at least 100 laps in the pool (or 5km) were rewarded with a finisher t-shirt for their achievement. The number of laps swam could be used to exchange for various gifts such as Block up Aloe Vera gel or even Arena water bottles!

Suited for every level of fitness and ability, the event attracted budding swimmers to seasoned triathletes. In addition, this year saw 2 disabled participants taking part in Splashdown, Alvina Neo, who requires orthosis to walk, and Adam, who lost an arm and the use of his other arm, and both successfully completing the 100 laps!

The fantastic sun drenched weather and the commendable efficiency of our volunteer officials also contributed greatly to the enjoyment of participants and supporters alike. This year saw an unprecedented 80% of participants completing the 100 laps challenge as well.

Special thanks to our sponsors who kept us hydrated, clothed, well groomed or just plain happy.  So start blowing some chlorine bubbles and join in on the fun next year!

The 12th NUS Invitational Lifesaving Championship 2011 was kick-started with a still-water clinic held on 20th May 2011. Almost 40 enthusiastic participants gathered at the NUS Sports and Recreation Centre swimming pool to learn more about the lifesaving events and their relevant techniques. A short briefing was carried out together with a series of demonstrations, before participants were broken into 6 groups.

These groups rotated around 6 stations which covered 6 different events—200m obstacle swim; 12m line throw; 50m manikin carry; 100m manikin carry with fins; 100m manikin tow with torpedo tube and fins; and 4X25 manikin relay. At each station, an NUS ULC member would go through the rules of the event and demonstrate the correct technique, giving some time for the participants to have some hands-on experience.

This served to give first-time participants some exposure prior to the competition so as to reduce the possibility of a disqualification. Rotating around the stations, participants learnt some tricks and tips of the various events in preparation for the championship.

On 28th May 2011, a grand total of 246 participants from 14 different institutions took part in the competition.

Manikins

This included teams from A2 Aquatics, Anglo-Chinese Junior College, Aquatic Realm, Ngee Ann Polytechnic, Nanyang Polytechnic, Nanyang Technological University, Republic Polytechnic, Singapore Institute of Management, Singapore Lifeguard Corps, Singapore Swimming Teachers’ Association, Singapore Polytechnic, Temasek Polytechnic, Water Sapiens and National University of Singapore. The day started off with a traditional march past led by NUS, with all the teams parading around the pool with their flags.

This year, the championship featured a new event—Simulated Emergency Response Competition (SERC) which required a mix team of 2 male and 2 female competitors. One chief to be appointed to lead the team and he/she donned a different cap for differentiation from his/her team members. The simulated situation was carried out on the event day itself. During the 2 minutes of the competition, the appointed chief was to demonstrate good leadership and communication skills, and the team members were to demonstrate good team work. Most importantly, all participants had to assess the situation presented and demonstrate lifesaving techniques and skills to the panel of judges who judged them based on criteria such as adequate care of the victims and safety. This event was in a bid to bring lifesaving in Singapore closer to the standards of that in International Lifesaving and was adapted from the World Lifesaving Competition.

Human and Manikin Simulators

The highlight of the day was undisputedly the SERC event. No single team used the same approach to deal with the same situation which included the use of human and manikin simulators. The team from the Singapore Swimming Teachers’ Association giving the best performance, with composure and speed, landing them the gold medal for their excellent team work and display of lifesaving skills.

For Division A, Temasek Polytechnic were the overall winners, clinching both Men’s and Women’s Champion, with the National University of Singapore as 1st runner-up, and Singapore Lifeguard Corp clinching 2nd runner-up. Whereas for Division B, the Overall Champion went to Singapore Polytechnic, with Singapore Swimming Teachers’ Association and National University of Singapore clinching Men’s and Women’s Champion respectively.

We would like to congratulate all winners and thank everyone for their support and active participation that made the 12th NUS Invitational Lifesaving Championship a success and we hope to see everyone again next year!
